I’m working on a american studies multi-part question and need a sample draft to help me understand better.
you must keep a news journal during the duration of this semester. Further explanation of “how to” do the journal can be found in a separate link in the syllabus section of the directory. It is located right below the syllabus. Please read it for detailed instructions as to how to correctly format the journal and what should be in it.

The intent of this journal is to afford you the opportunity to either become and/or stay informed of the current issues presently on the national political agenda. This is an exciting time in American politics and keeping abreast of developing policies and politics makes the concepts in the book come alive. The journal makes the concepts in the book a daily reality.
The news items you discuss in your journal are directly related to the material which is covered in your textbook and which we will also be addressing in class. It will quickly become apparent to you that the daily news items can be viewed in the context of the various political concepts, procedures, and institutions presented in this course; this should make both the text and class more relevant to your daily lifeSince we will be studying the three major institutions of American government, executive, legislative and judicial, it would be a good idea to begin your journal by focusing on these three institutions and all of “their links” and “connections” to various agencies throughout the government.
undefined
This is particularly interesting time to be studying the American government process. The executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the national government are all in session and will be in the news on a daily basis. There is a new President and a new Congress. This winter, two topics will tend to dominate the news as well as the branches of government; the coronavirus and economy. How are the three branches of national government impacted by these two overarching topics that challenge the American political process? And, as the states are continually challenged by the coronavirus, how do the three branches of the federal government interact with the states? It will also be interesting to see the constitutional issues of checks and balances and separation of power play out in real time.
undefined
The above paragraphs tend to focus on the executive and legislative branches; however, the third branch of government, the judicial branch, is a co-equal branch of government which plays a major role in the constitutional separation of powers and checks of balances. The federal court system, specifically the Supreme Court, began its session in October. It will run until the summer of 2021. During the semester it will be rendering decisions on cases that will impact the entire country. The cases selected to be heard by the Supreme Court are equally interesting to follow and use as material in your journal.
undefined
As previously mentioned, your journal entries should focus on political issues such as activities in the three main institutions of the national government. However, your journal may take off in many directions while focusing on the three main branches of government. While it is always interesting to focus directly on the three major institutions of the federal government, executive, legislative and judicial, these institutions are inter-connected in many ways through “links” and connections” through our many bureaucratic agencies of the federal government, for example, the Environmental Protection Agency, FBI, CIA, Pentagon, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. And since these are all agencies of the federal government, you may cover any of the issues that deal with any of these agencies. The Supreme Court hears most of its cases on appeal from lower courts, such as federal district courts and/or State Supreme Courts. Therefore, it is a good idea to keep an eye on these as well.
undefined
There are also many issues that are very broad in nature, such as our foreign policy which includes both military and economic ones. There are over 190 countries in the world and we conduct foreign policy with regards to each of them. How is our foreign policy evolving under the new Biden Administration? What is our relationship with Russia? China?Israel?Syria?Canada? The amount of information regarding foreign policy is vast and you may cover any of the issues in foreign policy.
undefined
Lastly, you might cover issues that fall under the umbrella of social justice which have recently more often then not, fallen under the purview of the Supreme Court. You may include any of these issues….for example, immigration policy, health care reform and more recently the Black Lives Matter movement.
undefined
All of the above are issues you may choice to include in your journal entries.

What Not to Include:
undefined

undefined
Local news, while both interesting and important in all our lives, is not the focus of your journal. Caution….many news items which are covered by the national press corps are not necessarily issues on the national political agenda. For example, many sensational murder cases are in the national news, but more often then not, murder is a state crime and the case is dealt with in state courts which follow state laws.

Weekly Entries:

undefined
Each week you should have two (2) journal entries. Each entry should be a healthy paragraph of 5 or 6 sentences.Your entry should summarize what you heard, read and/or saw in the news. You must then document each entry with the source you have used for your entry. If you use an internet source, you must provide me with the entire URL address of that source. And the URL address must be a complete URL address. (I should be able to use the URL address you provide and go directly to that source). Also, remember, these entries are to be a summary of what you have read, heard, viewed. You should NOT be copying the news “word for word” out of the paper and/or off the internet. You need to be summarizing the information from your sources and then giving credit to your sources for that information.
