Jodi post: Importance of Secular Literature I believe it is important for Christians to read secular literature because it teaches us how to empathize with those that are different from us. In the presentation “Becoming Careful Readers, Critical Thinkers, and Skilled Writers,” Professor Kingsburg talks about secular literature being important because we need to understand the world that is outside of a Biblical worldview. I agree with this. I believe you must be able to empathize with those who have different word views. You must understand their motivations and influences. It teaches you that no matter how different you may seem you are all connected. Reading secular literature also reminds you about humanity and that everyone has a story to tell as to how they have come to believe or not believe in certain things. For example, someone who has lost their faith and have come to reject the Lord, even they have a story and it is important to know that story, so we can fully embrace God’s love for us if we can learn and understand others who have fought with this love and rejected it. And just because you read things that contain topics that you may not condone does not mean you should not read it. Just because you do not agree with something or someone that does not mean you cannot empathize with them. Secular literature helps you to be able to look at a person who may have been labeled as a certain type of person and realize they are human, and they are not their label. It helps you humanize certain situations and people with all kinds of different scenarios that you may normally steer clear of.
