Wilson-Jordan asks her students to consider writing about “what type of life” Johnson has before and after his being burned in the fire (59). Was Dr. Trescott wise to save Henry Johnson given that Johnson was going to be disconnected from everyone because of his grotesque deformity? Does every person need to be connected to a community to have a healthful existence?

Wilson-Jordan ponders whether this text should even be taught? Ultimately, she decides to teach it. Considering her concerns and your experience with the text, do you think it should be taught?

One critic asks, “Is ‘the monster’ the disfigured black man or is it the town that comes to dis-figure him?” What would your answer be?
