IntroductionGlobal environment has in the past few decades beenobserved to have undergone serious changes which werelargely seen as the result of human actions. The quality ofenvironment is believed to have been significantly altered toan alarming rate through decreased in quality of air, water,soil, increased ocean pollution, wildlife extinction, loss ofbiodiversity, and increased in frequency and intensity ofcatastrophic natural disasters resulting in lost of lives andproperties, spread and increased in cancerous diseases andthe like (Abbas,2013). Hence, it is no longer subject todebate whether the above mentioned environmentalproblems are natural or anthropogenic. It has beenascertained that man as the senior citizen of the planet Earthhas been totally responsible through his greediness actionsof destruction and over exploitation of the environment andnatural resources. Hence, the need for environmentaleducation and awareness becomes paramount as an essentialmeasure to curtail the situation to a greater extent. In theworks of Ibrahim et al (2012) put forward thatEnvironmental education is a way of creating knowledge,comprehension, values, attitudes, skills, abilities andawareness among individuals and social groups towards theenvironment protection. The Geographical Association`sEnvironmental Education Working Group (1980) definesEnvironmental Education (EE) as a multitude of processesand activities by which an understanding of environment isdeveloped and through which caring and committedresponses are evolved. It is concern with knowledge,emotions, feelings, attitudes, and values. Its aim is toproduce informed and responsible citizens capable ofplaying an active role in all matters concerned with theenvironment in which we all inhabit (Maigari, 2002). Peopleneed to be made aware of the importance of our environmentin which we live and the need to preserve and protect it, aswell as the consequences of our actions in the course ofdevelopmental activities. Thus the ultimate aim ofenvironmental education is to redirect and shape humanbehavior towards responsible acts and commitments toenvironment. As such therefore, effective environmentaleducation gears and promotes responsible citizenshipbehavior toward the environment and environmentalprotection.Thus, environmental education and awareness as well asinduced public participation in environmental protectionbecome paramount to attaining environmental sustainability.Therefore, this paper attempted a micro study onenvironmental awareness, attitude and participation amongststudents of Lovely Professional University. The university isdiverse with a large number of students not only fromdifferent states of India but also across the world, whichprovide the good avenue to study and investigate thestudents` environmental awareness and participation.
